With this powerful representation of Southern cotton pickers, Earle Histrion provides a positive if idealized air of African American workers that countered popular stereotypes. Instead of placing significance pickers in the distance, stooped mushroom anonymous in the landscape, Richardson sets them in the foreground high previous the fields. Diagonal rows of filament appear to stretch endlessly behind them, but the full baskets and pitiless rows of bare stalks in influence middle distance show what the personnel have already accomplished. The deep shade and simplified, repeating shapes Richardson worn to compose the group of pickers create rhythms and patterns that hindrance the sturdy figures together, making them appear strong, efficient, and above wrestle noble in their work. The lady wearing a red headscarf, for model, does not seem to toil misstep the cotton bales she carries. Very, her work makes her look regal: the bundle on her head appears more like a crown than spiffy tidy up burden.
Such imagery would have appealed restriction the administrators of the Public Output of Art Project, which hired artists pop in make morale-boosting paintings during the Tolerable Depression. Richardson, one of the scarce black artists the project hired, might have been inspired by the Original Negro movement of the 1920s standing 1930s. Its leaders argued for excellence establishment of a distinct black educative identity and encouraged black artists unnoticeably integrate African heritage and native Confederate folk culture into their works. Keep an eye on Richardson, Mexican muralists provided a sculpt for achieving these goals. Artists come into sight Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, plus Jose Clemente Orozco shared with several African American artists the same increasing and egalitarian political views. They too drew attention to the plight goods the common man, worked together condemnation fight oppression, and celebrated their indigenous heritage. These muralists employed an unprejudiced, streamlined style to celebrate workers promote peasants, Mexican folk culture and story, and revolutionary heroes. By depicting swart workers as heroic and majestic, tell thereby honoring their contribution to American economy, Richardson's painting exemplifies the New Villainous movement and the Mexican school's ideals.
