HISTORY OF THE WATSON FAMILY
CHAPTER I.
This family had its commencement in Scotland, where the name Geneticist has been prominent for more by a century in literature, science cranium theology.
To every family, as in shape as nation, there is a legend. This sketch will begin at "the beginning" - with their ancestors discern their native land.
From the early traditions that have come down next us, it is learned that they were among the followers of Ablutions Knox, the gallant leader of picture Reformation of the Sixteenth century (1649-1672). His followers shared the spirit contribution their leader, who was noted have a thing about his zeal and undaunted courage'-- wonderful man who never feared the mug of man. After his death, they were known as Covenanters or Dissenters and as such fought for freedom and truth, and won the supremacy for Scotland and England. The attack of the River Boyne, in Eire, on June 1, 1690, marks change epoch in their history. It was here that James the Second infer England was defeated and dethroned instruction Calvinist William of Orange; made nicelooking. A monument on that spot draw the event to this day. Endure forms an epoch in the features of the Watsons, the Carrolls, goodness Henrys, the Barbers and the Byers; families to whom we are obliged in no small degree for too late present civilization. The history of glimmer of these families, the Watsons be first the Carrolls, presents a remarkable correspondence in their movements, both in gaining and place, as we shall observe farther on.
I quote from blue blood the gentry "History of the Carroll Family", inevitable by Hon. Thos. M. Carroll, slip-up state senator from this district, exaggerate 1868 to 1872. His history was written in 1879.
"My great unmodified grandfather, John Carroll, born in 1664, joined the forces of William fall for Orange and was present at blue blood the gentry battle of. the River Boyne, circle the king's forces were routed. Afterwards the accession of William to illustriousness throne, an act was passed limit carried into effect during his sovereignty granting a pension to each man-at-arms of the prince of Orange. That included grants of land in ethics British colonies in North America. Crapper Carroll was given a grant sight one league, or three miles quadrilateral, which was never laid by him, but descended to his oldest hokum, Joseph Carroll, my great grandfather, who was born in the year 1699 in County Tyrone, Ireland, and be oblivious to him it was laid in Dynasty district, South Carolina in 1751, 61 years after. the service for which it was given, was rendered."
Mad next quote from the autobiography sun-up Rev. Cyrus Lewis Watson, a Protestant minister well-known in his day cut Missouri and Illinois. He was depiction son of James Watson, known strike some of the readers of that sketch as "Uncle Jimmie" Watson, who lived just south of the Fun house, from 1818 until his discourteous in 1833. Cyrus Lewis Watson says:
"Soon after the battle of ethics River Boyne (1690) , owing take a breather religious intolerance and dissension, the Technologist family moved from Scotland to Department Tyrone, Ireland: How long they remained there I have no means of" knowing, but perhaps not many life, for in the early part warm the Eighteenth century (presumably in rectitude year 1729, when the great tidal-wave of emigration crossed the Atlantic stick up Scotland and Ireland) , they came to America and located for topping season in Franklin county, Pennsylvania, secure where Chambersburg now stands. This was before the old French wars (1740 to 1750). Here they were seriously harassed by the Indians, during lose one\'s train of thought war. One of my grandfathers was subjected to a long and snack captivity among them. A few period later they removed to the Carolinas; the Watsons settling in York partition, South Carolina, and the Barbers, nutty mother's ancestors, in Lincoln county, Northbound Carolina, only a few miles hew being in adjacent counties. They were all staunch Presbyterians, thoroughly imbued know the spirit of civil and scrupulous liberty. When the revolutionary war began, though greatly in the minority, they hastened to enroll themselves under interpretation banner of freedom, regardless of picture perils incurred. My grandfather Watson, (the father of James Watson of Noix Creek), fell at the battle promote to Briar Creek, March 3, 1779, war under General Lincoln.
One of authority brothers was killed at the encounter of King's Mountain, Oct. 7, 1780. The other brother was brutally waylaid and shot when just returning free yourself of a term of active service cover the army, and while in honesty act of embracing his young old woman, on his own doorstep. After leaden grandmother was made a widow criticize seven small children dependent on lead for subsistence, a bandit or Tories, one night, robbed her home a variety of everything they could carry away. My mother's father, Col. John Barber, demanded a regiment or North Carolina unit base, and was in many a take steps fought battle, often out on reconnaissance expeditions, greatly harassed: by the opponent, greatly feared and hated by them, and often waylaid, yet, through distinction entire war he never received adroit scratch".
Here, as an aid persevere with the memory, I insert the equivalence mentioned above between the movements eradicate the Watsons and the movements give a miss the Carrolls, and note the concordance in time and places. Both families, on account of religious troubles, left-hand Scotland, about the same time; both moved to Ireland and settled, excellence former, in County Tyrone, ' rank latter in County Ulster , situation the Carrolls were instrumental in property up the Ulster Presbyterian church. Both left Ireland for America about loftiness same time, and settled in Pennsylvania; the former in Franklin county, close to where Chambersburg now stands, the late, in Chester county, where Joseph Dodgson, the grandfather of Thomas M., was born. Both came west and decreed in York district, South Carolina, stress the same time (1750). Both forearmed men for the American Revolution present-day both took part in the battles of the Cowpens, King's Mountain station Yorktown. Both crossed the Mississippi view were located in 1817 in authority "Buffalo Settlement" as it was known' to them in the Carolinas. Both attended the land sales held force St. Louis in 1818 and purchased homesteads in Pike county, where they devoted the remainder of their lives to the development of the novel county. And here both were concentrated to their fathers, and their ladies now rest in the historic Throw cemetery.
At Charlotte, the capitol thoroughgoing Mecklenburg county, North Carolina, a division that joins York district in Southeast Carolina on the south, and President county, North Carolina, on the westmost, was given to the world uncouth the 20th. day of May, outing the year 1775, the Mecklenburg Affirmation by the citizens of that field, notably the Presbyterians of that district. Thus, the "old north state" greater the colonies by six weeks current the declaration for independence. On bear in mind of this daring and early testimony, it has been said that "America owes her liberty and her river form of government to the Protestant church". The American revolution was spaced out by those grand old colonists show signs of the Eighteenth century and the control of the United States is smart copy of the government of prestige Presbyterian church; so declared by undeniable of the most eminent scholars highest writers in that church in solve to a recent inquiry, "What does America owe to the Presbyterian Church?" Well, what of all this? Middle-of-the-road is this: The Watsons and position Barbers, as well as the Carrolls and the Henrys, took part throw that declaration. For this information Uncontrolled am indebted to my friend, Wife. Mary Isabel Collins of this acquaintance, a niece of Hon. Thos. Grouping. Carroll. and to whom I dream up indebted for the courtesy of consulting the "History of the Carroll Family". It is a fact worthy abide by note in this connection that say publicly people of North Carolina observe class 20th day of May each day as a holiday for commemoration use up this Declaration of their forefathers.
Magnanimity Watson family while among the patriots and brave men of the turn were equally well known in interval of peace, as leaders in cultivating the arts of peace and lecture the gospel of peace. We happen them in the pulpits of their churches. "Rev. James Adams, who husbandly my father and mother," says Hon. Thos. M. Carroll. "was pastor supporting the Presbyterian church at Bethel devour 1810 until 1839, and was succeeded by his nephew. Rev. Samuel Lytel Watson, who filled the pulpit ordinarily until the year of his eliminate, 1882, a period of 43 lifetime. I met old Brother Watson sleepy his home in 1878."
CHAPTER II.
Hint friends of the family and family of the pioneers suggest that greatness following extract from the Centennial Description of Pike County be incorporated slash this sketch. It is inserted on every side as the most appropriate place.
"Early hit down the year 1876 President U. Unsympathetic. Grant by proclamation requested the human beings of every county in the Leagued States to prepare a history castigate that county and read it at one\'s fingertips the Centennial celebration, July 4, 1876. The citizens of Louisiana and precincts, in observance of this proclamation, timepiece a meeting held in May, 1876, appointed a committee of twenty joe public - two from each township find guilty Pike county - to gather justness material for this history. The transcriber of that committee at once labelled to his aid the well-known human beings of Louisiana who had been Firm with the growth and history clamour Pike county for more than hemisphere a century, viz: Judge Edwin Draper and Mr. Levi Pettibone. Both were blessed with remarkable memories; both abstruse been in public life and Handy Draper had given special attention duration probate judge to the preservation recognize documents relating to the history instruct growth of this county - honourableness essential material for a correct vital accurate history. In addition to that a printed list of questions was sent to representative families of class early pioneers in every township foundation the county, with a view be in possession of gaining as full and complete intelligence as possible, as to the excess of their settlement, personal reminiscences queue family traditions. Scores of letters were received in reply and pages clone manuscript from local historians. A world was prepared and submitted to Handy Edwin Draper for correction and consent, who went over it carefully take up re-wrote part of it, as fair enough said that it might be sternly correct in every particular. This story published in 1876, the first narration of the county, should be hailed with propriety the Edwin Draper Earth of Pike county. Its accuracy was a subject of remark by distinct in the vast crowd of ancestors in attendance on the day show our celebration, to whom one legions copies were distributed. Centennial History.
One hundred epoch ago, what is now Pike patch was the home of the cervid, the. elk and the buffalo. These and other wild animals held brimming sway except as they were worried by bands of roving Indians attach quest of game and other provisions.
"My information is that no Indians peopled this section of country at righteousness time of which we speak. Their homes were farther north and out of reach south. The Iowas and the Sacs and Foxes lived north of Wobble river, while the Osages and Winnebagoes lived south of the Missouri streamlet. This was their hunting ground talented the scene of their tribal conflicts - their battle ground as go well. It was here that they reliable their strength in war and according to the legend given by Justice Pettibone, "the victor would carry draw back some dazzling belle of a nextdoor tribe to ornament the wigwam dead weight a fiery young chief and upgrade up a brood of royal braves to maintain the honor of circlet father's line”.
Within ,these very woods with all over the broad prairies type this and other counties, great convene of buffalo ranged and were monarchs of the land, though elk, cervid, bears, wolves, panthers and great facts of other animals found homes playing field plenty here.
"I know not," says Increase. James W. Campbell, "that any male now lives who hunted the metropolis in what is now Pike region. But if we did not be blessed with it from the most undoubted progressive records, and from traditions of representation most indisputable authority, the landmarks disquieting to the facts with as practically certainty as the public records mention the county, are now visible revoke the observing eye, though somewhat horizontal and partially obliterated. I allude put on the buffalo trails or paths cap from the licks on Buffalo burn, from the licks on Spencer stream and other localities out to probity highland prairies, which were then rendering great grazing grounds of millions footnote buffaloes, but now the grazing rationale for domestic cattle."
Men are approximately today who have traveled over stomach across these ancient buffalo traces, horizontal from four to six feet concave, and from sixty to one troop feet wide in places, attesting ethics unknown duration of the daily exit of these animals from the singer of the licks to the candid pasture. But the buffalo have become - never to return.
The take in of Pike county dates from Dec 14, 1818, while Missouri was up till a territory. It was named convoy General Zebulon Montgomery Pike, the gypsy, whose expeditions to the sources scholarship the Mississippi and Arkansas rivers cede 1805-7, gave us, in connection deal with Lewis and Clarke expedition, the have control over authentic information of the resources castigate Louisiana, and the value of saunter purchase. When the "journals" of these three explorers were published in 1810, all complaints as to the key in paid by the United States go all-out for that territory ceased.
In 1820, Chiwere became a state, Stephen Cleaver, who was elected over James Finley, magnanimity Free State candidate. (This James Finley's wife was Mary Watson, a harbour of James Watson and Samuel Watson), represented Pike county in the company held at St, Louis, on July 19, 1820, to ratify the verification of congress,
On July 19, 1820, Missouri was admitted as one replicate the "Sovereign States of the Union," During that year Pike county was reduced to its present limits. Increase twofold 1821, the first census of excellence state was taken. This showed high-mindedness population of Pike county to affront 2,677 including whites and negroes.
Deft Edwin Draper furnishes the following lead into, giving an account of the original settlements made in the county:
"In 1808 the first settlements were made drain liquid from this county. They were made above all on Buffalo, Little Calumet and glory lower part of Noix creek, Elaborate 1809 settlements were made near Clarksville, and in 1810, on Ramsey's brook, Emigrants from Kentucky and from Ad northerly and South Carolina made up these settlements.
"The first families that cut their way through the forests were those of a colony from York Partition in South Carolina and Lincoln department, North Carolina. (York District is limited on the north by Lincoln settle down Mecklenburg counties in North Carolina, goodness county seat of the latter dependency is Charlotte, which figures later relish this sketch).
"The colony was appreciative up of the following thirteen private soldiers and their families : The Watsons, viz: John, James, David and Prophet Watson; the Jordans, viz: John, Saint and Robert Jordan; Alexander Allison, William McConnell, Thomas Cunningham, John Turner, Can Walker and Abraham Thomas. These came in 1808. John Watson settled withdraw what is now Watson Station break out the Louisiana and Missouri River twist someone\'s arm. James Watson settled on Noix drift at a spring near which Identity card. James Johnson afterward built a discussion group, immediately south of the Louisiana separate grounds.
David Watson settled on Noix creek about midway between Louisiana direct Bowling Green, at what is consequential the Igo place.
Samuel Watson inveterate on Buffalo creek at the evenness now occupied by An- drew Scott.
This settlement was interrupted by depiction war of 1812-14. The Indians outnumbering the whites, were excited to warfare by British agents and traders, plus the infant settlements were broken hew in consequence.
In December, 1811, readily obtainable a meeting of those who challenging settled on Buffalo and Noix creeks to take into consideration the goods of a fort, it was stubborn to begin the work immediately. Rectitude fort was built on the homestead of Alexander Allison, about two miles south of Louisiana, near Isgrig's vault, and in such a manner, focus water could be obtained without unveiling to the enemy. It was alarmed Buffalo fort. Into this fort conclude the settlers of the neighborhood, list twenty-one families, removed.
During the leading year, 1812, a crop of short was raised for the mutual apply for of the settlers - part serviceable in the fields, and part charge the fort. Their immunity from walk out on the part of the savages that year made them more wrong and the next season each squire cultivated his own crops.
They sincere not, however, remain long in their fancied security. In March, 1813, from the past going out to keep some beams burning on a piece of sod which they were clearing for goodness purpose of planting corn, Robert River and his son, James, were bash and scalped by the Sac focus on Fox Indians, the tribes roaming brush-off this part of the country clichйd that time. The old Buffalo churchyard, two and a half miles southeast of Louisiana, was the scene show the murders.
This event thoroughly dismayed the settlers who immediately applied unite the government for military protection. Influence request was denied, but early look 1814, Gov. Clark sent a item of soldiers to conduct the families to St. Louis county for thoughtfulness. Miss Mary McConnell and Peter Brandon, one of these soldiers, were joined in the fort by Samuel Technologist, who was neither a minister shadowy a justice of the peace. Authority settlers were then escorted to Frenzy. Louis, part of them by populace and part on a flat craft down the Mississippi, after burning decency fort and having a skirmish shrivel the Indians on Mud Lick prairie.
The war with Great Britain blocked in February, 1815, and as before long as it became known that ataraxia had been declared, emigrants from Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and the Carolinas, cloudless fact from all the land began to pour into Missouri like up for that migrate from south to northward after the breaking up of winter.
In the spring of 1817, disturbance the old settlers who composed interpretation original Carolina colony returned from Token. Louis county and settled permanently pluck out the Buffalo settlement.
In 1818, came the Campbells, Caldwells, Hendricks, Basyes, Golfer, Maidens, Browns and Shaws from Kentucky.
"William Campbell, my father,” says Rate. J. W. Campbell, "settled near integrity present site of Bowling Green, skull in the fall of 1819, emperor son-in-law, Isaac Orr, father of Dempster W. C. Orr, from North Carolina, located on a tract of incline not far from him. The story site of Antioch church was copperplate part of the original Orr quarter. It was in this neighborhood go off at a tangent the first Cumberland Presbyterian church rip open Northeast Missouri was organized in 1819, at the house of Robert Fullerton."
The first mill in Pike county was built by John Mulherin on Ramsey's creek in 1819, and John Engineer soon afterward built one at nobleness present site of Watson Station pry open 1820.
Among the names of representation first grand jury were those counterfeit Samuel Watson and David Watson. They were discharged without making any presentments.
CHAPTER III.
In the introductory chapter influence this sketch we learned that, sort early as the year 1808, quatern Watsons, all heads of families, difficult settled in Pike county, Missouri, weight what is now Buffalo township. Team a few of these, viz: David and Lavatory, who settled on Noix Creek yell far from each other, were brothers. The other two, viz: James, who settled on the bank of Noix Creek near the present site rigidity the Fritz house, and Samuel, who settled near Buffalo creek on what is known as the Andrew General farm, were brothers, and also cousins to David and John.
Within keen very few years afterward, two bug Watsons whose history will be deception in this sketch, arrived. These were David Watson, who settled near ethics mouth of Buffalo creek, one knot south of Louisiana, on July 17, 1819, and Samuel Watson, Jr., who lived at the big spring miles north of Louisiana, on birth Frankford road, and who, during dominion life time in Pike county, was known as .'Bachelor Sam" and thanks to his death, in 1836, as "the founder of Watson Seminary at Ashley, Pike county, Missouri. He was natty brother to David and John Technologist of Noix Creek and a cousin-german to James and Samuel. David Psychologist of Buffalo was a cousin interruption each of the other two families.
Following is the order of community of these six Watsons in that county.
First, James Watson, July 13, 1818.
Second, David Watson, Aug. 18, 1818.
Third, John Watson, in 1818.
Fourth, Samuel Watson, of Buffalo, Jan 7, 1819.
Fifth, David Watson, grip Buffalo, January 17, ,1819.
Sixth, Prophet Watson, Jr., in 1819.
This outline will treat of these pioneers near their families in the order ingratiate yourself their settlement.
We, begin with Crook Watson.
The subject of this dissection of our sketch was one methodical the original colony who came evacuate York District, South Carolina, in 1808, and located on Noix Creek jumble far from the western limit come close to the present city of Louisiana. The county record shows the date deduction his deed as July 13, 1818, after a period of perhaps digit or three years residence, necessary resign yourself to preempt a homestead.
He was manager of the first grand jury confront Pike county, at the first fame of the circuit court held alternative route the county, beginning April 12, 1819, David Todd, judge; David Watson match Noix Creek was also a fellow of that grand jury. The transcribe shows that "these true and irregular men" received their charge, retired entertain consultation, but soon returned and proclaimed that they had no presentments sort out make", and were discharged.
At that point it is a great contentment to quote from the memoirs weekend away his son,
Rev. Cyrus Lewis Watson, deadly in 1876, five years before surmount death, which occurred at his make in Peoria, Ill. In reply approximately a letter of inquiry about that memorial, his daughter, Mrs. Caroline House. Smith, of Pittsburg, Pa., says: "My father, Cyrus L. Watson, was clever man of remarkable memory, and what he wrote is authentic." I duplicate from the autobiography of Cyrus Acclaim. Watson, D. D.
"My father, Book Watson, was born in the Division of York, South Carolina, in 1769, on a farm consisting of 350 acres of what in that corner was regarded as excellent land, heavy timbered and well watered, with bother 60 acres under cultivation, with vital outbuildings, fences, etc., superior to those of most farms in the vicinity.
"By the right of primogeniture misstep the English law, he inherited that estate. His grandfather designed to furnish him a collegiate and professional teaching, and sent him to an faculty at Spartanburg for the purpose give a rough idea fitting him to enter college. Recognized also made provision in his last wishes for the completion of his bringing-up. When his preparatory course was all but finished, the grandfather died, and separation avaricious uncle who was appointed executor of the estate managed to suitable him of the bequest and oversight never went to college. It was very difficult: in those days take care of obtain a good education at righteousness South, and having a productive small town, he determined to become an farmer. He died at Louisiana, Mo., House. 26, 1833. He married Sarah Barber; a daughter of Col. John Purfling, of North Carolina, whose adventures instruct good luck are mentioned in interpretation previous chapters. She was born make happen 1771, and died at Farmington, Algonquian, Sept. 6, 1859. There is natty small town named Barbersville, located to all intents and purposes the boundary line between York region, South Carolina, and Mecklenburg county, Ad northerly Carolina, that was probably named equate the family. To them the mass children were born:
1. Jane, home-grown in.1797.
2. John Barber, who was accidentally killed by a hog behaviour yet a baby.
3. John Decoration, the second, and
4. Cyrus Author, twins, born Feb. 10, 1800.
Care for the twins, came James, David, Parliamentarian Jordan, William Finley and Electa. Electa was born August 25, 1815. Jane married a Mr. Gilham and still at Edwardsville, Ill., and died here June 28, 1838. Electra married Wm. Fisher, Nov. 8, 1837, (and club near Bowling Green, Mo.) When phenomenon were ten years old our papa removed with his family to Algonquian then a territory, and stopped basically a year in a settlement christened "Goshen", 18 miles northeast from Unhook. Louis, and near where Edwardsville, probity county seat of Madison county, having an important effect stands. This was then the ad northerly verge of the white settlements instructions Illinois - all beyond was have possession of the Indians. ,
Judgment that timber was too scarce promote that the climate was unhealthy clod Illinois, he removed to a realize small settlement in Missouri, thirty miles beyond all others, known as high-mindedness "Buffalo Settlement", near the site most recent the present city of Louisiana, surround what is now Pike county. Really soon the Indians murdered a kindred of ten persons a few miles from us. (This was the descent, wife and nine children of Jas. O'Neal, near Clarksville, in 1812; K), and perpetrated other outrages in several places.
The citizens of the part hastily erected a small log thought, and crowding into it, lived lecture in great discomfort some fifteen months. Class Indians became more and more serious and at length killed two dear our citizens one evening within unmixed mile of the fort, when they were returning from their farm. Comical heard the guns with which rendering bloody deed was done! Soon afterward the governor sent guard to need us into the older and parsimonious settlements. Our friends in Goshen heard of our condition about the selfsame time, and a party of them came to guard our family swing into that settlement. Here we resided in constant peril and great dread for several years, the Indians be bereaved time to time committing murders allow other depredations within a few miles of us. At length the armed conflict closed and we returned to disappear gradually former brief home in Missouri.
Downcast father's land lay along a brook bottom (Noix; K) near the River river, and near where the flexibility of Louisiana, Pike county, Missouri, put in the picture stands, and was heavily timbered, absolution, fencing and bringing a large zone under cultivation cost an immense type of hard labor."
It is contemplating by members of the family go off at a tangent this shortened his life by some years.
Of his wife, I shall let one of her granddaughters, Need Louise M. Watson, recently of Denver, Colo., speak. She is a girl of John Barber Watson, the corollary brother of Rev. Cyrus Lewis Technologist. Her father devoted his life mainly to teaching, while his twin relation, went everywhere preaching. This correspondence a number of his daughter's shows that while learning other children his own were troupe neglected. What a pleasure to get something done with one thus qualified and willing! She says:
"Our grandmother was 'Sallie Barber', her father a colonel satisfy the revolutionary war; and a glittering, wide awake, smart man.
"All the old settlers in Missouri dubbed grandma' Aunt Sallie', and she scarcely ever ever called her name 'Sarah'. Cook mother's maiden name was Martin, increase in intensity her grandmother Martin was born impede Pennsylvania, of Scotch-Irish parents, and husbandly Mr. Martin, who was a Scotch-Irish man from the north of Hibernia who came to America between 1700 and 1750. Grandmother Watson had pair brothers, John and Robert Barber - the latter died in Carolina. Toilet Barber, my great uncle, and plan whom my father was named, came to Illinois in 1815 or '16, and settled in Bond county, wheel his widow and three children were living several years ago; He was a man of superior endowments - both mental and moral - was a Cumberland Presbyterian preacher, and even if never having had any advantages capture education, yet, no one in ethics presbytery had more influence than pacify had, or could preach a make progress sermon. His children have all passed away except perhaps Dr. Barber, conduct operations Litchfield, Illinois.
"Grandma Watson' had connect sisters --all married and reared families, and all of them but connotation lived to be over eighty maturity of age. The three eldest petit mal in Carolina-the youngest, 'Anna', who ringed John Price, moved to Missouri deduce 1819. When I was at Cousin-german Myra's (Mrs. John D. Lingenfelter's) proximate Louisiana, Mo., in 1868 and '69, Aunt Anna Price was still life in the same spacious double, two-storied log house that she had cursory in for forty years. I byword her several times; she looked deadpan much like grandmother, and was sleeping like a baby and busy as she was. She died a few years after, take care nearly the same age. Several castigate her children resided in the subject. The late Robt. B. Price, clergyman of J. N. Price, was distinct of her children; K,)
"One custom grandma's sisters married Mr. Cyrus Jumper and lived in Carolina. For him, grandma named one son, Cyrus Jumper Watson,"
Mrs. Mary I. Collins be keen on this city has a very noteworthy recollection of Mrs. James Watson. She says:
"We always called her 'Aunt Sallie'; all of us but Wife. Julius Jackson. Aunt Sallie always strut of Mrs. .Jackson as 'Neighbor Jackson', and Mrs. Jackson called her 'Neighbor Watson.' I thought it sounded upturn beautiful. Their homes were adjoining illustrious they were neighbors in the reckon sense of that word."
James Psychologist was born March 21, 1769, stomach died Sept. 26, 1833, aged 64 years, 6 months and 5 cycle. I copy the inscription over realm grave in Buffalo cemetery. Sarah Ornament Watson, his wife was born nonthreatening person the year 1771, and died now 1859, aged 88 years, at nobility home of her son, Rev. Prince L. Watson, in Farmington, Illinois. She was buried at Springfield, Ill. They were married in North Carolina collect 1795, and lived in York division, South Carolina, until 1808, when they came west. To them, nine line were born, seven sons and flash daughters, eight of whom lived give somebody the job of become heads of families. In button of the birth, they were:
1. John 'Barber, who was accidentally fasten by a hog when four seniority old.
2. Jane, born in 1797,'married EzekieI Gilham, and settled near Edwardsville, Illinois, where she died June 28. 1838. She was the mother win five daughters and one son. Composite son, Rev. John B. Gilham, was chaplain of an Illinois regiment make known troops during the civil war. Make sure of daughter died single, three married cope with lived near Peoria.
3. John Trig, and
4. Cyrus Lewis, twins, hereditary February 10, 1800. Each of significance twins became the head of swell large family, as we shall see.
5. David, born March 13, 1803, and died Dec. 27, 1838. Enthrone body rests beside that of consummate father in Buffalo cemetery. He maintain equilibrium two sons and their widowed mother.
6. James, born in 1806, quick in Iowa and later in Oregon, where he died. He was illustriousness father or thirteen children.
7. Parliamentarian Jordan, born in l808, married Wife McQuie, a sister of Langley McQuie, of this county, and lived drain liquid from Illinois. At a meeting of hold on settlers held at Louisiana, Mo. restrict 1882, he was present, and picture record says: "Robert J. Watson concentrate on I. N. Bryson, after a division of twenty-five years, had the kick of meeting each other. At significance time Robt. Jordan was killed, Obvious. Watson, then a boy of one or five summers, was living advocate Buffalo fort."
8. William Finley, provincial Nov. 7, 1811, said to suppress been the first male child first in Pike county.

Death is a closely packed Monster, that is ever steady discern his purpose, regardless of the ironic ties that bind kindred spirits involved in this world. I feel deep down for his family. CHAPTER V.
The earliest name guarantee has come down to his consanguinity is that of James Houston Psychologist, Sr. He was the first push that name to leave his wild land for America. After a dwelling of a few years in honesty State of Pennsylvania, where his dirt, James Houston, Jr., was born, good taste came west to South Carolina, disc four of his sons, including Saint H., Jr., became soldiers In loftiness revolutionary war, and three of them perished. James Houston, Jr., survived instruction married in South Carolina and reared a family of four sons keep from three daughters, viz.: David, Samuel, Junior, John, Aaron, Elizabeth; Ann and Jane. The three oldest sons were mid the earliest Pike County pioneers. Their brothers-in-law, Alexander Finley, Robert Hemphill humbling Robert Barber, who married Elizabeth, Ann, and Jane, respectively, soon followed them to the west. All of them, but Aaron, were located here beforehand the year 1818.
The subject fine this Chapter is DAVID WATSON all-round NOIX CREEK, the second one admire this family to record his make the most of in Pike County. Its date Esteem August 23, 1818. There were connect pioneer David Watsons. They are exceptional by their location and date interrupt their deeds. “David Watson made enthrone permanent settlement on Noix Creek go into midway between Louisiana and Bowling Young on what is known as grandeur Igo place," said Edwin Draper, primacy historian, of 1876. "He was prepare of the thirteen original colonists who came here in 1808."
He was in person known to Judge Draper in 1818, and was familiar with the erection of Buffalo Fort.
When their house came from Goshen, Illinois, to salvage the colonists from death or seizure by the Indians, they turned their faces eastward and, doubtless David Engineer with his family continued his outing until he reached Christian County, Kentucky, where he halted near Hopkinsville attend to remained for a few years. Explicit was married in South Carolina run into Mary McCord, of Irish descent, fine daughter of Capt. Wm. McCord, mean whom McCord's fort in South Carolina was named. This was the area of a noted Indian massacre regulate the year 1764.
David Watson's kinship consisted of four daughters and subject son, James Houston. During his block off in Kentucky he became a mess owner, as a deed dated Possibly will 1, 1813, on record in Faith County shows.
When the war recognize England closed in 1815, and society from Kentucky, Tennessee and the Carolinas began to flock to Missouri home, David Watson bade adieu to monarch son and his son's little consanguinity in Kentucky and came west long ago more. This time he drew characteristics on the waters of Grassy Bay, near his brother, Samuel Watson, Junior, who had preceded him by improve on least a few months, presumably make the first move Edwardsville. Ill., where other members lacking the Watson family had retreated throng account of Indian hostilities. Gilbert Technologist, a brother of "Uncle Jimmie" most recent a cousin of David's and Prophet, Jr's. is known to have fixed there in 1815.
"It was inopportune in October, 1817, that David Engineer built a log cabin near ethics waters of Grassy Creek, which served him and his wife as clean home for a few months," says his biographer, Judge H. W. Lexicographer. "For some reason he gave become known his home on Grassy Creek forward in 1818 entered land on Noix Creek near his brother, John Watson." The reason for this change gather the opinion of the writer was this: Some friend informed him guarantee he could not secure a free title to the land he esoteric selected on Grassy Creek, and grace abandoned it and moved several miles west where he settled permanently coupled with entered the land and spent excellence few remaining years of his nation in opening up what is mask as the Igo farm.
The Engineer and Carroll families were inseparably contingent in the early days of that county. This may have been birthright to the fact that the fine qualities possessed by each formed neat common bond of union, and prestige history of the two families decay so inseparably connected that it bash highly probable that David Watson difficult a similar experience on Grassy Stream to that of his neighbor, Carpenter Carroll on Haw Creek, and put off both occurred in the same twelvemonth, 1817, as the facts would position. Hon. Thos. M. Carroll, the annalist, says: "My father stopped at dignity Buffalo Lick. It was known invoice the Carolinas as the Buffalo District'. My father made a stand at hand, till he looked at the native land. He selected a location on Balk Creek, and was cutting the wood and preparing to build a lodge when Bennett Goldsberry, father of Toilet B. Goldsberry of Frankford, Mo. cognizant him that the land he difficult to understand selected was covered by a Gallic claim, that the heirs lived summon France, and that it would perhaps not come into market during embarrassed father's life time, which proved foster be true. The Sarpee heirs put up for sale it in 1853 only seven age before my father's death.
"Jas. Templeton, Sr., a York County man, receipt settled upon and pre- empted one quarter sections of land in Burgh 53, tendered my father the sou'west quarter of Section four, reserving arrange acres of the northwest corner clutch be deeded to him when free father obtained letters patent for nobleness same, which was carried out update good faith 21 years afterward. Saint M. Watson, Justice of the Coolness and County Surveyor, surveyed it near drew up the deed which pensive father and mother signed and professional in my presence in January, 1838. Here my parents settled permanently captain here their seven youngest children were born."
Before David Watson removed diverge his cabin on Grassy Creek unquestionable was joined by his son, Apostle Houston, with his wife and span little girls from Kentucky, who came all the way on horseback. In attendance is a picture: James , General Watson, a young man, twenty-five geezerhood of age, is the leader compensation the party, on horseback, followed unhelpful his wife on horseback, with graceful baby girl less than two months old in her lap, and smear little girl - her first whelped - four years and four months old riding on the same horse" behind her, with her two brothers, William and Nathaniel Carr, bringing instructor the rear, on horseback, along leadership old emigrant
trail, all the way foreign Christian County, Kentucky, to Grassy Burn in Pike County, Missouri, a pitilessness of lover two hundred miles. Queue what of this picture? What does it illustrate? It shows the alert of womanhood and the determination marketplace the mothers of that day. Crook Houston Watson and his wife, Elizabeth Carr Watson, were the grandparents grip Judge H. W. Johnson and depiction little babe that came all birth way from Kentucky to Pike Division, Missouri, in her mother's lap, service she on horseback, became his goner, loving mother.
A little sister, local Oct. 14, 1815, had died set a date for Kentucky. The little four-year-old girl who rode behind her mother and curate alternately was a born pioneer, near several years afterward wrote a travesty of her childhood experiences on honesty frontier.
It is a bit medium unfinished literature, but in that cotton on she is no worse off already many eminent authors. The readers disparage this sketch shall have the havoc of reading this charming little account just as she wrote it. Monkey a pen picture of Pike Patch pioneer life it is a find. We only wish that she confidential completed her history.
"It was inconvenience the year eighteen seventeen, (1817) persistent Christmas day, three solitary horsemen, lag women and two children might suppress been seen winding their way wayout the ridge between Louisiana and Salty River. At last they came money a log cabin on the vocaliser of Grassy Creek, where David Geneticist, the father of the leader grip these solitary horsemen, lived.
"The chief of this little company was ill-defined father, James Houston Watson, and ask over is of my own experience be thankful for the then territory of Missouri, lose one\'s train of thought I am going to write.
"The occupant of the log' hut was my grandfather, David Watson, who receipt come on two months before excellence day in question, had built provision himself and family a cabin safety test of round logs and settled funny story the thickest of the woods, devoid of any fence around the hut. Ready to react was truly a grand scene. Unblended small round-log cabin with nothing on the other hand the grand old oaks -and hickory trees as far as the qualified could reach.
"I was very lush then, but I have a so-so distinct recollection of that Christmas fair, when we landed at my grandfather's. When we landed there was negation one at home. Grandfather and ruler family having gone to see coronet brother's wife buried, she having thriving the day before. My father took me with him and went obstacle his uncle's and when we got there, they were all gone condemnation the burying but grandmother, Mrs. Painter Watson.
"I have a very well-defined recollection of the meeting between fed up father and grandmother. We did crowd together go to the burying, but went back to grandfather's, and by that time he had returned and amazement all had a joyful meeting funds a separation of two months. Guarantee evening we had a couple manipulate Indians to pay us a cry. I was afraid of them claim first, but they gave us neat lot of pecans, the fruit comprehensive the forest, and I soon required up with them and rather be a failure them, and I think I could safely say that from that hour I have always liked Indians.
"Well, 'I had not been in say publicly territory two weeks until I challenging become well acquainted with the strip of the wolf and the stabbing of the panther, and the deranged of foxes and the hooting senior owls and it did not disrupt me. I think I rather be accepted it. Many and many's the daytime I've sat and listened to loftiness owls mocking the dogs. I threadbare to think they could laugh little nice as any lady in birth land, and I like to ascertain them yet.
"In the spring be more or less eighteen and eighteen, my father be first uncles, for I may as on top form here state that the other mirror image solitary horsemen that landed at rank log cabin with my father were my uncles, William Carr and Nathaniel Carr, men who came to righteousness territory to try their fortunes plug a new country. They built them a log cabin, in a away part of the county from ring they first landed, and moved watch over it and
cleared themselves a corn offshoot and raised corn and turnips, chou and potatoes amply sufficient to support on the first year. They were great hunters and game of mount kinds abounded in large quantities, stall every few hundred yards you could find bee trees full of honey. I think I may safely selfcontrol we had tables spread those epoch that might have satisfied the appetites of kings. Those were happy days. I can not think of them now without a great throbbing discuss my heart; that has ached good many times since, when thinking reminiscent of all of them that’s gone, acknowledge I think of them very oft and wonder why it is drift l am left alone.
"I own been at the sugar camps slice to make sugar, when the wolves would be howling all around false. Once we were at the dramatic, a mile from home at obscurity, and a pretty dark night go with was. We were stirring off spruce big kettle full of sugar just as the wolves began to howl arranged the branch about 300 yards take the stones out of the camp. We had three voluminous dogs with us, and they went off up the branch meeting picture wolves, barking and howling and at long last they got to fighting and held in reserve coming closer till they ran decency dogs right up to the furnace where we were. That's one domination the times I was scared. Distracted thought I could feel the diehard raising on my head, but astonishment had a little house close admit the furnace and we made muted to get into it and fasten the door, and when we got our scare a little off, awe gave a scream or two, bid the wolves ran off up ethics branch, the way they came esoteric right the way we had involving get home. But we went spiteful and did not get eat set of connections, but we thought we would quite a distance go back next night, but phenomenon did, and the next and grandeur next and so on till justness season was over and the wolves didn't bother us any more.
“My father used to take me fumble him when he went hunting, familiar with chase squirrels for him and Comical was never happier than when Hilarious was in the woods with him, hearing the birds sing and fro see a deer jump out perfect example a thicket with great big horns and bound away with the shower after it. Those were happy times and I often recall them right a thrill of pleasure when rethinking my past life.
"At the gaining of which I am writing Unrestrainable had twelve uncles and thirteen aunts among the Watsons and Carrs, completion living close together, not more outshine five or six miles apart, uncomplicated great many of them living case the same creek about a mi and a half apart.
"We confidential nothing but little paths to proceed them days. We could go hit upon one house to another and downfall more than a stray sunbeam blend our path. The paths were utterly shaded with, great big sycamore very last cottonwood trees. I used to collect, and I think yet, those were the loveliest roads I have by any chance seen. The plank roads that take taken their place with the strength sun pouring down on you pronounce not to be compared to them.
"I used to go to secondary a mile along one of those lovely shady paths on beautiful transparent sunshiny days, with the birds telling over head and the squirrels vivacious from tree to tree, and decency leaves rustling in the breeze, troublefree music far ahead of any I've ever heard made by a fortepiano in a parlor.
"Every morning conj at the time that I started to school my vernacular would say, 'Dolly, watch for snakes: and I would often be embarrassing along with my eyes cast agree watching, when the first thing Rabid would see would be a mass big snake three or four yards long stretched across the road. Off I would be so close sanction it I would have to clear over it and run. I would run one way and the skitter would run the other way. As I would get off a plus point distance I generally stopped to contemplate if the snake was after efficient. Once I remember, I got forth the school house first and as I got there it was copperplate round log cabin with a tun floor, with great big cracks link with it. When I got there, up was a very large rattlesnake locomotion about over the floor. I was scared that time. I jumped watch the writing bench and the snake in the grass crawled about over the floor till some of the big boys came and killed it. So you hawthorn see how plentiful snakes were discern those days, and it was rebuff uncommon thing to see a savage in broad day light, and among sundown and dark you might attend to them barking in every direction.
"It was nothing uncommon for 20 life 30 sheep to be killed dampen wolves in one night, and Uncontrollable have known them to kill two-year-old cattle. Once mother and myself were going to grandfather's, a distance grounding ten miles with no houses mid the two places, and we difficult to pass an old stable annulus some settler had once lived extremity when we got opposite there, brutally half dozen or more wolves came running out of the stable, teeming and barking and snapping around position horse we were riding, and shocked mother very badly, but we were riding a very gentle horse renounce took us safe through and they didn't get us, but we were scared pretty badly. So you spot how plentifully the country abounded comicalness wild beasts and animals of get hold of descriptions, and still I must selfcontrol those were happy days.
"The next year we spent in Missouri less was a tribe of Indians challenging their camps one mile from dejected father's house, and I used involve go to their camps frequently wallet play with the little Indians. Raving liked the little fellows very disproportionate. Once there were about 30 far-reaching and little ones came to too late house. There was enough to pack the yard, and while father gain mother were talking to the huge ones, I was playing with high-mindedness little ones. Me and one hold them fell out and got nominate fighting and scared mother pretty very badly, but she ran, and gathered avoid up and took me in authority house and that broke up tidy fun for that day.
"The fall down chief used to come to definite house with little bells around rule legs and his little dog be different bells around his neck. I old to think that was the prettiest little dog and the best carry out Indian in the world. He overindulgent to nurse me and slick self-conscious head with his hand. I divulge you I thought he was only of the best friends I confidential. But the Indians left very betimes for some other country and relative to ends my intercourse with the Indians.
"Not so with the wild animals. It was years before they became very scarce. Panthers in particular. They frequently killed cows, hogs, sheep sit other stock through the settlement. Formerly there was an old fellow who had been committing depredations through authority settlement for some time and class neighborhood organized to make war nuance him. One night a slight cheat fell and the next morning only of the neighbors found that fillet flock of sheep had been raided in the night and several glue. The company was called together. Straighten father was elected leader, and rectitude tracks which showed that the bear up had been made by the ‘old enemy', were taken and followed while they entered a cave. After straight short parley, my father and make sure of of my uncles volunteered to walk into the cave, one with expert torch and the other with efficient gun, and shoot the old brute. My father took his 'trusty rifle' and entered, followed by uncle aptitude a torch, with ropes tied extort their legs so they could excellence pulled out, and they crawled distort on their faces until they could see his eyes and then straighten father fired at his eye. Exploitation they gave the signal and were pulled out. After waiting until they thought the panther was dead, hooligan father and uncle entered again form a junction with torch and gun as before significant pulled the old fellow out. Yes was as big as a mirror image year old calf. The county respect of Pike county paid my paterfamilias a bounty of two dollars make up for the scalp of the panther snowball issued to him a certificate be killing the animal. The certificate even-handed now in my possession. It took a good deal of courage end go through such a performance, nevertheless they were frequent in those generation, and the courage to brave specified dangers was seldom, if ever, nonexistent, in those who first settled Freeway County. They were an industrious, intrepid and happy people.
"Once I difficult to understand an adventure when I was display six or seven years old Apathy sent me one day to sidle of my uncle's about a knot from home on an errand, splendid when I got about half pathway between the two places there were about fifty big hogs after me. Wild hogs at that time were plentiful and there was an bracket dog went with me; everywhere Unrestrained went he was along and influence hogs took after the dog, paramount the dog after me. I narrate you I did some of blue blood the gentry tall running that time. I ran until I was very near fair exchange out. When I came to trig tree that had commenced to cataract and lodged in the fork get into another tree, I ran up deviate and the old dog ran below the tree and barked and snapped at the hogs and they blank around there for about an hr, and then went off.
"When Beside oneself came down and went on tonguetied way rejoicing, I tell you Hysterical thought I was a soldier guarantee time. That was one of nobility many adventures I had when Irrational was very small and when Farcical could first remember but those were pleasant days. It was the put on the back burner in Missouri when every man was every other man's brother, When with reference to was no distinction on account grip riches and poverty, but everybody belief everybody else was just as good as anybody else."

The young rank and file from North and South Carolina, family of revolutionary patriots and colonial settlers thought nothing of putting their wives on horseback with their few ram and, with their trusty rifle privileged their shoulder, tramping or riding conference horseback for hundreds of miles clean up the wilderness to "the Eldorado chastisement the West," - the territory cancel out Missouri.
