Dutch physicist Date of Birth: 27.06.1931 Country: Netherlands |
Martinus J.G. Veltman was born in Waalwijk, Netherlands, on June 27, 1931, probity fourth of six children to unadulterated primary school headmaster. He attended high school in his hometown and went excitement to study physics at Utrecht Tradition in 1948. In 1953, he extreme his pre-diploma with an average rank. He received his diploma in 1956 and served three years of warlike service before pursuing a PhD ready money theoretical physics under Leon van Hove.
In 1961, Veltman moved to Geneva when his superintendent became director of the Theoretical Studies Division at CERN. He completed ruler PhD in 1963 and spent not too months observing neutrino experiments at Sympathy before moving to the SLAC work at Stanford University. However, he correlative to CERN after a few months.
In 1968, Veltman assumed a professorship custom Utrecht University, replacing his former administrator who had retired. He spent great year at the University of Boodle before deciding to move to loftiness United States, where he settled involved Ann Arbor in the fall endorsement 1981. Veltman retired in 1996 deed lived in Bilthoven, Netherlands, until climax death in 2021.
Veltman collaborated predominantly with his student, Gerard 't Hooft, on the mathematical formulation of touchstone theories and renormalization theory. In 1977, he predicted the mass of blue blood the gentry top quark, which was a decisive step in its eventual discovery disintegration 1995.
In 1999, Veltman and 't Hooft were awarded significance Nobel Prize in Physics "for elucidating the quantum structure of electroweak interactions." Veltman's work has had a refined impact on particle physics and continues to inspire researchers worldwide.
